Peggy Lynn Cole

Peggy Lynn Cole, 76, of Greenville, passed away at her home August 23, 2023. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with Rev. Nicholas Funk officiating. Burial will follow at Memoryland Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.

Peggy was born August 21, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan to James William and Margaret Marie Adams Thompson. She married Ronald ''Chip'' Cole September 16, 1967 at St James Episcopal Church, Mesilla Park, New Mexico.

Peggy's father was a doctor and her childhood included time spent in Iowa living with her grandparents, in the hills near Welch, West Virginia, where her father was the doctor for a mining company and at various Army posts after her father was called to serve in the Army during the Korean War. As he remained in the Army, Peggy's homes included 4 years in San Juan, Puerto Rico where Peggy swam on the Puerto Rico Team at the Pan American games (She won 1st place in the Butterfly!)

Next post was White Sands Missile Range near Las Cruces, New Mexico. It was there she met her husband-to-be at a Peter, Paul and Mary concert on March 10, 1965 at New Mexico State University. They were married in 1967, raised a family and spent nearly 56 years together.
In 1968 they moved to Greenville and, except for a 2-year assignment in Germany, that's where they stayed 'til Peggy's forever and where daughter Tina and son Ryan were born.

Peggy attended East Texas State University where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and a Master's in Public Administration. She worked as a Director with the Public Housing Authority for Greenville, Texas and then was a Police Planner and Administrator for Finance; Procedures & Policy for the Police Department of Richardson, Texas, commuting daily from Greenville (and coming home each night to prepare dinner for her family!). She was a devoted member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where she served on the Vestry and on Altar Guild for more than 40 years.
After returning from Germany in 1973, Peggy resided in Greenville for 29 years and then relocated 12 miles south to Club Lake where she lived out her life, enjoying her home and her friends in Greenville, in garden clubs, a bridge group and at Club Lake.

Peggy is survived by her husband, Ronald ''Chip'' Cole; daughter, Christina Rutledge of Austin; son, Ryan Cole and wife, Staci of Heath; brothers, James Thompson of Winchester, KY, William Thompson of Las Cruces, NM; sister, Mary Ortega and husband, David of Mesa, AZ; grandchildren, Currie Larrimer of Lake Bluff, Ill, Ella Jane Larrimer of Austin, Reece Cole of Frisco, Jack Stewart and Ava Stewart of Heath.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, Laura Sue Thompson McGuire and sister-in-law Bonnie Thompson.

A celebration of life is planned for a later date.

The family would like to express its sincere gratitude to Peggy's hospice care team for their loving care.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to CurePSP at PSP.org or any health-oriented charity.
